Ever thought your computer was boring and unexciting? Now you can make it as exciting as you want.

Steps

Start with the background. Go to the desktop and right-click. Click Properties on the menu that comes up. Now click on the ‘Desktop’ tab and change the image or pattern to what you want. Alternatively, you can search on the internet for pictures. Just save them in My Pictures and do what it says above.

Change your screensaver. Again, right-click on the desktop and click Properties. Now choose the tab labeled “Screen Saver”. There will be a drop-down menu. Pick the one you want. If you want to see what your screensaver looks like, press the “Preview” button. If you want to change the settings of the screen saver click the “Settings” button.

Alter what the windows and text look like. Still on the Display Properties menu, click on the “Appearance” tab. You can either choose a scheme, or make one yourself. Simply click on the different parts of the window in the picture, and change the color and font, if applicable. You can also save your schemes using the “Save As” button. From the “appearance” screen, you can also change things like highlight color, and the fade color at the top bars of windows you have opened. For example, you could change the standard Windows blue(if you’re using Windows) to a stylish green, or red, whatever suits you!

Change your mouse cursor. You can do this by going to the Control Panel, and double-clicking on “Mouse”. Click on the “Pointers” tab. Double-click on the cursor you want to change. You will come up with a list of cursors. There is a variety of cursors already there, but they are not all that good, so if you have any other cursors, search for them. Select the one you want. You can also select a scheme, and like the previous Appearance box, you can save your own schemes.

Examine your icons. Like before, right-click on the desktop, and click “Properties”. Go onto the “Effects” tab. Select one of the icons on the picture, and click the “Change Icon” button. Either choose from the icons on there, or browse for them on you computer.

You can also go to Stardock.com and download the free program WindowBlinds. It comes with several “skins” and you can download many others from the same website. It is free, and will allow you to select the exact style you want for your computer. Warning!–this program only works for Windows XP, if you want to run WindowBlinds on 2000 then download the 2000 version on the Stardock website

If you have a Linux based computer and you are running GNOME go to system, then preferences then screensaver to change the screensaver and theme to change the window properties. To change the desktop background simply right click on the desktop then click change desktop background.

On a Mac, head up to the Apple up to and go into System Preferences. Desktop should let you select an image for your back drop and General will let you change the buttons and bars. You can also access the screen saver menu from the System Preferences.

Tips

You can get a lot of things from the internet, so if you are looking for a particular scheme, e.g. space, you can search for wallpaper, backgrounds, etc.

If you want to change the cursors or icons back to normal, just press the “Default” button.

You can also have animations as your wallpaper.

The Linux step works best on Ubuntu, although it should work on any GNOME based Linux system such as Fedora.

Warnings

This works on Microsoft Windows 2000, but it may not work on other operating systems.

WindowsBlinds may add a cool new theme to your desktop, but it has to be running for it to display your theme. This means another process running in the background, and for low memory computers, it could slow performance.

Be careful when downloading files from the internet. There are numerous “spyware” and “adware” programs that promise to install new screensavers, smilies and wallpapers that can be difficult, and annoying, to remove.

Many of these themes can slow your computer down.

Deleting a program from your computer, may leave remnant links in your files. In order to make sure the program is completely deleted, just perform the following steps.

Steps

Completely uninstall the program you want to get rid of.

Now you need to get rid of the registry items pointing to that program

Go to Start/Run/Regedit.exe

Go to File

Click Export (in Win98 and WinME this will be Export registry file)

Save the file in c:\

Then name the file regbackup. Click save.

Go to Edit

Go to Find

Type the program name.

Press F3 to search.

Once an item is found, read to make sure it is a link to that program.

Press delete to remove it.

Continue pressing F3 and deleting items pertaining to the program, until all the links are gone.

Tips

If you need to refresh, press F5

Repeat all steps for more than one name for the item, ie Business name, Program name, Alias etc..

Warnings

Do not delete anything other than what is needed…you should backup registry beforehand.

The registry is the heart of Windows; if you mess it up, Windows will no longer work – backup/export it before starting any changes. If in doubt, don’t do it!

Editing the registry is very dangerous and should only be done in extreme cases.

Some associations in the registry, if removed, will break other functioning programs or windows itself.

Make sure you do steps 4-7 first before changing the registry.

Thanks Wiki

Have you been saving some pictures and video clips to your PC? Do you have files that you’d like to make inaccessible to other users? This is for you. Keep in mind – this is only for Microsoft Users.

Steps

Right click, on the desktop or in a folder, on the white or vacant space. Go to “new”, a new menu should show up next to it. Go to “Compressed (zipped) folder”. Give the file a name.

Double-click the file, it will open up as a folder window

Drag any of the files you wish to protect into this window

Right click in this window on the white or vacant space, Go to “Add a password…” The password can be whatever you want it to be, but keep it easy to remember, but hard for hackers to guess.

Delete the private files that are anywhere else.

There you have it! Your very own password-protected folder.

Tips

The password can be whatever you want it to be, but keep it easy to remember, but hard for hackers to guess.

Be sure you save it to a disk in case you need to access this folder to another computer.

Warnings

Close the folder every time you leave the room so other users won’t have access to this file.

Follow these direction precisely and carefully. Should you screw this up, it’ll will be difficult to go back and undo any mistake you made.

Don’t forget the password. (obviously)
